Zimbabwe Healthy Community
Container of Supplies for Tshelanyemba Hospital
Early in 2015 The Rotary Club of St. John’s Northwest in partnership with The Salvation Army St. John’s Temple, sent a forty foot shipping container to Tshelanyemba Hospital filled with hospital, community and school supplies.
A Team of 8 travelled to Zimbabwe in September 2015 to distribute the supplies and complete number of tasks. Highlights included:
Hospital
- Provided life-saving medical supplies and equipment
- Nurses on the team instructed on the usage of the supplies
- Lecture on wound care and leg edema to staff nurses and students
- Installed operating room lights and table donated by the Rotary Club of Saint Pierre
- To assist in the prevention of infectious diseases, 100 mattresses, blankets and pillows were purchased locally for the hospital.
Community
- Distributed community supplies to the hospital and nearby villages, including clothing, footwear, bicycles, water buckets, and household goods
- Repaired a roof that was damaged in a storm
- Distributed tools and supplies to a carpentry school and maintenance shop
- Presented Bibles, tambourines and uniforms to the local church
- Provided five albinos with a one-year supply of sunscreen
Schools
- Provided school supplies and sporting equipment to seven primary schools
- Provided school and office supplies to a high school
- Taught English classes at the local high school
Water and Agriculture
- Visited the village where the Rotary Club of St. John’s Northwest funded an artesian well in 2014 and saw the gardens that are now growing
- Visited the farm where the team fenced 10 acres of land in 2014. Farming has now quadrupled and provides enough vegetables to supply the hospital, with surplus being sold to supplement hospital income
- Purchased a pump and irrigation supplies for the farm
Partnerships
- Liaised with the Rotary Club of Matopos (Zimbabwe) to explorefuture projects in the community
